Craig's News News New iPhone UI

New iPhone UI

Updated: My prediction came close!

My favorite Smart Phone has been the iPhone since it was first announced. I have had 2 of them and I'm not switching any time soon even with horrible AT&T coverage. I have seen however, better UI (in my opinion) on the Palm and Andriod OS platforms.

My biggest beef is launching apps. I always have my phone loaded with the maximum allowed apps which takes up 9 screens. To find ones that don't fit on the Home Screen I must either swipe, press the super small dots at the bottom of the screens (above the dock) or first go to the search screen (which means I need to remember the name of the app). All of these methods are slow as far as I'm concerned. I have the idea that there should be folders to organize all the screens. I would (for example) have a Social folder, a Web Design Tools folder, Travel and so on. Nine folders which all reside on the Home Screen as thin horizontal bars each with it's title and user-defined color.

To further speed up launching apps... I would use a finger touch-and-hold to roll up all the apps in that group. Then, move your finger over the app you want and release your touch to launch. However, you can simply touch and release a bar (folder) to go to that group as a screen as in the current OS version. And one last nice touch would be to leave enough space at the top of the new Home Screen for a status update bar that scrolls all your updates from apps that would support it. News, Stocks, Inbox, Friend Requests, all customizable of course. And that same display needs to appear before the swipe to unlock the phone (or at least a simplified version that excludes personal information).

YAY!!! Uncle Steve just announced the new iPhone 4 features. Now over 2,000 apps more quickly launched on my phone. Well, in a few months anyway.
